Sowa - Classic Japanese Construction Worker Pants (Spring-Summer)
Classic "tobi" pants as worn by Japanese construction workers. "Chocho Long" indicates a very long inseam, and "hachibun" (八分) refers to the 8/10 baggy style — the lower portion of the leg is wide and relaxed, creating the distinctive silhouette of traditional Japanese workwear.
Made from 100% "summer tropical" polyester — a lightweight, breathable fabric designed for warm-weather wear. Ideal for spring and summer work or fashion.
Fit & Style Guide
- Cut: Baggy hachibun (八分) style — wide and relaxed through the lower leg. This is a deliberately oversized, workwear silhouette, not a slim or tapered fit.
- Inseam: "Chocho Long" extra-long inseam — designed to be worn with a generous break at the ankle. If you prefer a cleaner hem, size up in waist and have them hemmed.
- Waist fit: Sizes use a waist range — measure your natural waist (around the navel) and select the size that covers your measurement. If you are at the top of a range, size up.
How to Measure
- Waist: Measure around your natural waistline (at or just above the navel), keeping the tape snug but not tight.
- Inseam: Measure from your crotch seam to the floor along the inside of your leg.

These are my fourth pair of Toraichi, and although I originally intended them to be something of a novelty, (I chose camouflage, accordingly) these are my favorite cut, thus far.
I intend to acquire more of them, in more colors, as I could wear these every day. The cotton fabric, in conjunction with the roominess of the cut imparts a micro-climate effect that helps regulate temperature much more comfortably than western work pants. Less weight at the cuffs makes them easier to walk around in, and they don't drag at the cuffs or at the seat, nor do they bind.
And, yes-- "fighting spirtit at work!" is more than just a slogan. I am old enough to remember the world before civilian cargo pants, when the work of cowboys dictated what the rest of us wore to work in the US. When cargos hit the scene, they gave one the feeling of "combat readiness," as they were adapted from Battle Dress Uniforms, but they are a flawed concept.
Toraichi imbue the wearer with a similar feeling of readiness and ability, but with a much less militaristic attitude; "fighting spirit," with the intent to do one's best, and not necessarily to defeat, dominate, or harm anything in the process.
For me, and the life I live-- they are perfect, even though I do not ride horses.
