An ukiyoe design featuring the legendary warrior Benkei.

In Japanese mythology, Benkei stood at Gojo Bridge in Kyoto where he disarmed all who attempted cross. At last, in his 1000th duel, he was defeated by Minamoto Yoshitsune, son of a great warlord. From that day Benkei became a retainer for Yoshitsune.

Ukiyoe (pictures of the floating world) originated in the 18th century, and the vivid images of geisha, kabuki actors and famous figures became quintessential symbols of Japan.
